I work on a small team within a larger R&D group. Earlier this year our program changed. Now, 5 months later, I'm still having to remind my boss of the difference between two key technologies that we're using. He's also often mixing up unit prefixes (I do it to, but not all the time) or questioning why we're adding a feature we've reviewed a number of times. He's in his early 60s and I'm worried he's experiencing some early-onset symptoms or something. He's a great guy and still is helpful in business practices (developing the structure for proposals, etc.) but it's becoming difficult to make progress in getting budget and driving decisions from leadership when he has a hard time retaining the limited number of details and justifications for what we want to do. Has anyone gone through something like this? I'm really hoping it's a temporary thing, but thinking back it does seem like he's had a gradual decline and some personality changes over the last year, and it's only now that things have gotten quite apparent that I'm realizing there may have been earlier signs. I think the right thing to do is to talk to him and ask if he's doing okay, but we don't have regular one-on-ones and it will be hard to make this happen naturally. I don't think engaging HR is the right thing to do, and I don't want to go over his head to higher management either.
